No U-Turn road sign, MUTCD R3-4

No U-Turn · MUTCD R3-4 · Regulatory sign

What the No U-Turn sign means

This sign shows a U-shaped arrow reversing direction with a red circle and slash, meaning you may not make a U-turn here. You cannot turn around to head the opposite way at this spot. U-turn bans appear near curves, hills, busy intersections, and places where limited sight distance makes reversing direction dangerous for oncoming traffic. Continue to a legal turnaround point instead. In California you may never make a U-turn where a sign prohibits it, in a business district except at an intersection, or where you cannot see 200 feet in each direction.

What to do when you see it

Do not turn around here; drive on to an intersection or spot where U-turns are allowed and sight distance is clear.

On the CA permit test

No U-Turn means you cannot reverse direction at that location.
