What the No Left Turn sign means
A red circle and slash over a black left-turn arrow prohibits left turns at this intersection. You must go straight or turn right instead. The sign protects intersections where a left turn would cross oncoming lanes dangerously, block a signal, or is physically impossible because of a median. It applies where it is posted, and a time plate below it may limit the ban to rush hours. Making a banned left turn is a moving violation even when the road looks completely clear of oncoming traffic.
What to do when you see it
Do not turn left here — continue through or find a legal alternative, and obey any posted time restrictions.
On the CA permit test
No Left Turn bars the turn even if no traffic is coming.
