What the Railroad Crossing Ahead sign means

This round yellow warning sign with a black X and the letters RR warns that railroad tracks cross the road ahead. It is placed well before the crossing to give you time to slow, look, and listen for a train. Be ready to stop if signals flash, gates lower, or a train approaches. Never try to beat a train or stop on the tracks. The advance warning matters most at crossings without gates, where you alone are responsible for checking that the way is clear before crossing.

What to do when you see it

Slow down, look and listen for a train, and be ready to stop before the tracks — never race a train to the crossing.
