What the No Outlet sign means
This yellow diamond warns that the road you are entering — or the network of streets it leads to — has only one way in and out. Unlike a simple dead end, a no-outlet area may branch into several streets, but none of them connect through to another road. If you drive in, you will have to come back out the same way. It is posted at the entrance so through-traffic does not get trapped. Choose another route if you are trying to reach a different road.
What to do when you see it
Do not expect a way through; the street or subdivision only exits back the way you came in.
On the CA permit test
No Outlet warns the road, or the streets it feeds, has no through connection — you must return the way you entered.
