California Guide & Service Signs
Updated July 9, 2026
Guide and service signs give you directions, distances, and the location of services rather than a command. They are read by color: green points to destinations and exits, blue marks motorist services like hospitals and rest areas, and brown marks parks and recreation. They inform you — they do not require a specific driving maneuver.
How to read guide & service signs
Read guide signs by color. Green means directions, exits, and distances. Blue means motorist services such as hospitals, gas, food, and lodging. Brown means recreational and cultural sites. A blue sign with a white "H" points the way to a hospital.
