What the Right Lane Must Turn Right sign means

This white regulatory sign tells drivers in the right lane that they are required to turn right at the intersection ahead. If you stay in that lane you cannot go straight — you must make the turn. It is posted before intersections where the right lane becomes a mandatory turn lane, often to keep through traffic moving and feed turning traffic onto a cross street or ramp. If you want to continue straight, move out of the right lane before you reach the intersection where the sign applies.

What to do when you see it

If you are in the right lane you must turn right here; move left beforehand if you need to go straight.

On the CA permit test

A mandatory-turn-lane sign forces the turn — the lane you are in dictates your movement.
