What the No Turn on Red sign means
This sign overrides California’s default rule that lets you turn right, or left onto a one-way street, after stopping at a red light. Where it is posted, you must wait for a green signal before turning — no turn on red is permitted. It guards intersections with heavy pedestrian crossings, limited visibility, or complex signal timing. Come to a stop and remain stopped until the light turns green, even if the way looks clear. Turning on red here is a violation and a frequent cause of pedestrian conflicts.
What to do when you see it
Wait for the green light before turning; do not turn on red even if the intersection looks clear.
On the CA permit test
No Turn on Red cancels the normal right-on-red rule — you must wait for green.
