Which States Offer the DMV Test in Spanish?
Data verified against official state sources June–July 2026 · Updated July 12, 2026
As of July 12, 2026, 45 of the 50 states offer the standard car permit knowledge test in Spanish; the only exceptions are Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wyoming, which test in English only. Motorcycle coverage is thinner — 32 states offer the motorcycle knowledge test in Spanish — and commercial licensing is the outlier: just 12 states currently offer the CDL knowledge test in Spanish.
States whose official knowledge test is available in Spanish, by license type.
Recent changes
- February 6, 2026 — Florida: FLHSMV began administering all license exams exclusively in English (announced January 30, 2026).
- June 1, 2026 — Texas: DPS discontinued Spanish CDL/CLP knowledge testing (DPS news release).
- 2026 — Illinois: the Secretary of State's CDL testing page now states CDL exams are “administered in English only,” superseding the 2024 Spanish-testing announcement.
The CDL numbers reflect a federal squeeze: under 49 CFR §391.11, interstate commercial drivers must be able to read and speak English regardless of the language their knowledge test was taken in — a Spanish knowledge test is a study aid for learning the rules, not an exemption from the English-proficiency requirement. Federal enforcement of that rule tightened sharply through 2025–2026, and several states dropped non-English CDL testing in response.

How we verified this
Every row comes from an official source: the state's driver manual, its DMV/DPS/MVD website, or a published agency statement — not from third-party test-prep sites. “✓ Spanish” means the state's official knowledge (written) test is administered in Spanish; it says nothing about the road test, which several states conduct with English commands. Many states offer additional languages beyond Spanish — this tracker covers Spanish specifically. Oral or audio versions offered as literacy accommodations in English don't count as Spanish testing. Rules change quickly (three states changed policy in 2026 alone); the verification date at the top of this page is the promise.
Common questions
Can I take the DMV written test in Spanish?
In 45 of 50 states, yes — the standard car permit knowledge test is offered in Spanish. The exceptions are Florida, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Wyoming, which test in English only.
Can I take the CDL test in Spanish?
Only in 12 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin. Even there, the hazmat endorsement test is typically English-only, and federal law still requires commercial drivers to read and speak English on the road.
Does taking the test in Spanish change the questions?
No — it's the same exam, officially translated. Question counts and passing scores are identical. See the passing-score calculator for your state's exact format.
What about the road (driving) test?
Language policy for the behind-the-wheel test is separate and stricter in many states — some require the examiner's instructions to be given in English. Check with your local office.
